Gaye Njorro Skill Academy – Gambia

Professional School

The Gaye Njorro Skill Academy is a professional school for underprivileged people.

Founded in Banjul (Gambia’s capital) by Fatou Saine Gaye, an entrepreneur who studied and worked in England. For her social impact she was awarded the Social Entrepreneurship Award promoted by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) in 2016.

The Gaye Njorro Skill Academy offers courses for hairdressers and aestheticians, cooking and catering courses, IT courses in two main locations, in Banjul and in Farafenni. To implement the activities and therefore the impact, new courses will be added based on market demand and transferable skills.

Gambia is among the poorest countries in the world, with a very high unemployment rate and lack of skills. However, after the last elections the country is experiencing a new social and political atmosphere of hope.

Collaborations with SIT include:

  • Writing a business plan for the improvement of the school and research of institutional donors.
  • Training of the teachers of the school: experts of handicraft and technical jobs (such as: carpentry, electrical systems, solar panels, etc.) and experts in processing of food raw materials.
